EZX phones are a family of PDA-phones produced by Motorola. Firmware is made of a linux 2.4 kernel (montavista+patches, sometimes not really redistributed) and a Qt-embedded-based userspace. The OpenEZX project aims at replacing Motorola's kernel by an entirely free 2.6 kernel. This project is integrated to OpenEmbedded to build custom rootfs along with OpenEZX kernels.

From a hardware point of view, the EZX phones use XScale processor (SoC with 32bits ARM CPU, 48MB RAM and many controllers: touchscreen, keypad, etc.). One good aspect (for the HBot project) is that EZX phones have a so-called “Enhanced Motorola USB” plug, which can be used as a serial interface to controller card.
